Reactions of alkali metals with water

  • Alkali metals belongs to the first group of periodic table.
  • They are Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubdium, Cesium and Francium.
  • They are represented by the symbols Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, and Fr respectively.
  • Down the group the electropositivity increases.
  • Electropositivity means electron releasing tendency of a metal.
  • When we compare the reactivity of LI and Fr with water, the later is more reactive than the former.
  • On exposure to air, its metallic lustrue is darkened.
