Structure of ethanol

- Ethanol is a solvent. It is used in couph syrup.
- iodine dissolved in ethanol – tincture of iodine.
- Ethanol is an industrial solvent.
- DNS – denatured spirit – dye is added to ethanol to avoid illegal consumption.
- Ethanol reacts with sodium to form sodium ethoxide with the evolution of hydrogen gas.

- Ethanol loses a water molecule when it is heated with excess concentrated sulphuric acid.


When ethanol is oxidised, it gives acetic acid. (CH3COOH) (ethanoic acid)
