Properties of Ethanol

  • Ethanol is liquid at room temperature.
  • It affects central nervous system.
  • Slows down metabollic process.
  • Causes confusion, depression and drowsiness.
  • lowers the sense of judgement.
  • impairs the muscular coordination.

Structure of ethanol

CH3CH2OH

  • Ethanol is a solvent. It is used in couph syrup.
  • iodine dissolved in ethanol – tincture of iodine.
  • Ethanol is an industrial solvent.
  • DNS – denatured spirit – dye is added to ethanol to avoid illegal consumption.
  • Ethanol reacts with sodium to form sodium ethoxide with the evolution of hydrogen gas.
  • Ethanol loses a water molecule when it is heated with excess concentrated sulphuric acid.
Ethene is the product.

When ethanol is oxidised, it gives acetic acid. (CH3COOH) (ethanoic acid)
