Friction – advantages and disadvantages

Definition

The force that resists the relative motion between two bodies in contact is called friction.

Advantages

  • Enables us to walk freely.
  • Piling of objects without slipping
  • application of breaks on moving vehicles
  • supports ladder against wall.
  • One form of energy can be transferred to another.

Disadvantages

  • Restricts motion
  • Requires extra energy
  • Wear and tear of machines
  • Affects the lifetime of moving parts.

Methods of increasing friction

  • Spreading sand on slippery roads
  • Making the footpath or shoe soles rough
  • Improving grip to the ground by fitting spikes in sport shoes

Method of reducing friction

  • smoothing the surface by polish
  • applying lubricants (grease or oil) on moving parts
  • using ball bearing in wheels
  • designing curvy shape to submarines and jets to reduce friction by air
